Celebrating the Big Apple Crunch

Earlier this week, Red Rabbit Education Team joined  Uptown Grand Central and Hunter College Food Policy Center at the fourth annual Big Apple Crunch. The day is designed to bring together hundreds of local East Harlem children for a morning of fun, delicious, and educational activities. Big Apple Crunch is a way for New York City residents to celebrate healthy eating by getting as many New Yorkers as possible to bite into an apple in a single week! In recent years, there have been more than 800,000 participants nationally.

Red Rabbit set up an Apple Sandwich table inviting the kids to make their own delicious and healthy version of a sweet sandwich. The activity had a couple simple steps - spread soy nut butter dip on the donut shaped apple slice, top that with another slice of apple, and then sprinkle homemade Red Rabbit granola right on top of it for an extra crunch!  The sandwich offered up a new, inventive way for kids to eat apples while also serving as a yummy morning treat!

One of the best parts about this community focused event is the opportunity to partner with so many other like minded individuals and organizations including GrowNYCEdible SchoolyardHarvest Home Farmers Market, and Apple Bank Care.  Other activities at the event included apple painting, apple bag toss, and an apple race... basically a field day featuring apples!

The brisk fall weather paired with a  bite of sweet apples and tons of kid-friendly activities made for an energetic and fun-filled morning for all. Red Rabbit is excited to continue participating in Big Apple Crunch as it has become a fall staple in East Harlem. If you haven't had a bite of an apple this week, grab a Honeycrisp, Macoun, or Granny Apple and take a big bite!
