Red Rabbit, Largest Black-owned K-12 School Food Company, Expands To Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey Markets
Driven by Social Justice, Red Rabbit Provides Nutritious & Culturally Relevant Meals Prepared by Professional Chefs to Urban Schools Throughout the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic Region
HARLEM, NY (APRIL 13, 2021) –Red Rabbit, a New York City-based, black-owned and MWBE Certified school food management company, has officially announced their expansion into the Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey markets. Red Rabbit is the largest black-owned, K-12 school food company in the country, currently serving over 5.5 million meals per year to urban schools throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Region.
Founded in 2005 by social justice advocate and entrepreneur, Rhys Powell, Red Rabbit believes that choosing to feed children diverse and nutritious food is an act of social justice. The company’s mission is to provide all children with access to nourishing, made-from-scratch school meals that are also culturally relevant. With over 30 countries represented in Red Rabbit’s kitchens, the company employs professionally trained chefs that run full-service operations, from sourcing to serving to create the very best cafeteria experience for school communities.
“We celebrate food from all cultures in the lunchroom, especially Black American and Latino cultures,”
- said Rhys Powell, CEO & Founder of Red Rabbit.
“We aspire to give children a vision of themselves that is both healthy and aligned with their heritage, thereby invalidating society’s arbitrary boundaries of who is allowed to be healthy.”
Red Rabbit works with schools, networks, districts, foodbanks, and government officials alike to uplift communities of color. Currently, the Federal Reimbursement rate for public school lunches is only $3.51 per child. Red Rabbit’s meals are priced below the federal reimbursement rate, making nutritious, culturally relevant meals accessible to the most underserved communities. Popular dishes like Pollo Guisado, Suya Chicken, Jollof Rice, Chana Masala and Jerk Chicken are just a few of the well-loved items that are both wholesome and familiar to the kids that Red Rabbit serves. All meals are prepared from scratch daily and are comprised of thoughtfully sourced whole foods and ingredients.
As part of Red Rabbit’s expansion into Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, including Camden, Newark, East Orange, and Trenton, the company is actively doing business in the region through partnerships with the Food Bank of South Jersey and other K-12 districts, networks and schools. In addition to nutritious meals, Red Rabbit also provides educational programs for students, teachers, and parents, including in-school cooking labs, gardening labs, afterschool and summer programs, and Saturday classes that engage the whole family.
“We look forward to expanding our reach to urban communities throughout Philadelphia and South Jersey to help kids develop meaningful relationships with food that is familiar and nutritious, while giving them the opportunity to build their cultural identity,”
- said Naeema Arrastia-Rateau, Red Rabbit’s Chief Business Officer.
