Red Rabbit Sustainability Principles

Sustainability is very important to us and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact throughout our business.  We are continuously looking for solutions in all areas of the supply chain and source our ingredients from local vendors whenever possible. We encourage our school partners to use our reusable dishware, utensils, serving and food containers and have completely eliminated the use of styrofoam. We are in the process of launching a school partner recycling program.

Waste Management

In addition to our reusable dishware and utensils, serving and food containers program, we recycle paper, plastic and aluminum. We even recycle #5 plastic that is often used for food containers by participating in the Preserve Gimme 5 Program.

Leftover food is donated to local organizations that are in need of healthy food, such as the Bailey House, serving community members who live with HIV or AIDS located in East Harlem.

Sustainable Sourcing

We take our role in the community very seriously, connecting students with their food. We hold our farmers, vendors, fish purveyors and bakers to the same standards as we hold ourselves. We seek out and build relationships with suppliers with like-minded goals and provide the freshest produce and ingredients to our school partners daily. Working with suppliers that are located in our area also allows us to strengthen our community, support the local economy and contribute to healthy ecosystems.

Empowerment and Action through Education

Education is an integral part of our daily operations. In addition to a robust hands-on education program, our production facility in East Harlem is a place for experimentation, empowerment and action. Our sub-irrigated planters are scheduled for installation on the roof top in early 2012 and will be a place for teachers, students and community members to explore gardening options and methods. Our fast-paced kitchen, office, school cafeterias, classrooms, and creative gardening spaces are ideal places to learn and take action for passionate interns and recent graduates who are passionate about social, economic and environmental change.
