Do Red Rabbit meals comply with USDA regulations?
Red Rabbit has never used the USDA as our benchmark. We have exceeded those nutritional requirements since launching in 2005. Healthy food is in our DNA.
What does Red Rabbit mean by "healthy food?"
For us, “healthy” means not serving processed foods with unhealthy ingredients. Our made from scratch meals do not use high-fructose corn syrup, refined sugars and other “undesirable ingredients”.
Is Red Rabbit organic?
Our suppliers are either organic or leaders in their industries because they always use industry best practices and farm responsibly.
How does Red Rabbit create meals that are healthy yet still affordable for schools?
With proper planning, there is no need for quality ingredients and preparation to translate into higher costs. We also look for ways to reduce costs for schools, such as replacing disposable plates, trays and cutlery, with reusable (and more environmentally-friendly) ones.
Are all of Red Rabbit's suppliers local?
All of our vegetable, fruit and dairy suppliers are located regionally. Some of our suppliers are even located just a few streets away. Once in a while, we have to look a little further afield to find a farm that allows us to provide the quality that our kids and schools need and expect—while also meeting their school reimbursement requirements.
Who creates Red Rabbit´s menus?
Our head Chef works with our team of nutritionists and pediatricians to make sure we are offering age and nutritionally appropriate menus. The final word rests with kids, as each recipe is kid-tested and approved.
Where is Red Rabbit food produced?
All of our meals are produced in our modern, commercial kitchen located on the same premises as our office in Harlem.
Why offer Educational programs?
We believe learning about food, where it comes from and how to prepare healthy meals will help kids form healthy attitudes and habits that last a lifetime. By offering Learning Labs for educators and parents, we can give them the resources and tools they need to become leaders in the healthy school food movement in their schools and communities.
Is Red Rabbit green?
Sustainability is very important to us and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact throughout our supply chain. We source our ingredients from local vendors whenever possible, encourage our partner schools to use recyclable serving implements and containers. We also donate all leftover food to local organizations in need. In addition to composting two-thirds of our waste, we are in the process of launching a school partner recycling program.
Do the kids eat the food?
Yes, absolutely. We send out frequent surveys to our school partners in addition to our constant contact and frequent in-school visits by our team members. We enable teachers with the tools and techniques they need to get the kids to try the food when it is unfamiliar to them. We ask kids what they like to eat and then we make it healthy. We even make our own ketchup!
How is this beneficial to my school?
Schools will eventually need to be compliant with the policies of The Child Health and Hunger Free Act. Choosing Red Rabbit healthy meals now, puts schools ahead of the requirements. In addition, more and more research shows that children who eat healthy have less absenteeism, better concentration and are better behaved than those children who eat less healthy meals.
Is it more expensive than DOE lunches?
Red Rabbit provides great-tasting meals made from scratch with locally-sourced foods that children enjoy within the same reimbursement rates as that of SchoolFood. We work with each school to customize a meal program within their budget.
How do you work with free and reduced programs?
Schools can still receive reimbursements for children eligible for free and/or reduced meals. The school will work with the agency responsible when using Red Rabbit service. Red Rabbit doesn't actually work with the free and reduced program, we price our meals within the reimbursement rates, so that there isn't any additional out-of-pocket costs to our schools.
What time are deliveries made?
Delivery times are customized to each of our schools and highly dependent on the type of service chosen. We offer off-peak delivery times for those schools that have kitchen facilities to re-heat the food on their own. Our ready-to-serve delivery can be anywhere from 4 hours to 30 minutes before meals are served, as we package the food in temperature-controlling bags and containers.
Who do I contact if something is missing or incorrect?
Red Rabbit prides itself on our exceptional customer service. All you have to do is call our toll-free number and our customer service staff will be more than happy to help you and rectify the situation.
How do you handle student allergies?
Red Rabbit understands the unique dietary needs of all children. We can accommodate any special dietary need, allergy or restriction. Let us know which children require adjustments during sign up or anytime afterward and we'll create meal options that don't include those food and those meals will come labeled appropriately.
Do you have gluten free options?
Yes, Red Rabbit caters to the needs are every child. We serve gluten-free tortillas and pasta and often use brown rice.
How many food choices do we get a day?
We provide menus at the beginning of each week, with the specifics on the daily meals that will be served. At this time, Red Rabbit is not able to offer multiple menu options.
Does the food reflect the season - if it is cold out will there be more hot food?
Red Rabbit meals are always made from scratch and therefore always include a hot entree. We are more than just a cold cereal and sandwich type of meal service program. Since we use locally grown produce, our menus typically reflect what's in season.
Are your products/packaging eco- friendly?
We encourage all of our schools to choose bulk delivery so that the food can be served via reusable pans and plateware/utensils. We have been unable to find an individually packaged container that will keep the food hot, not distort and won't spill. We are constantly working towards a solution and researching many options.
What packaging options are available?
This is one of many ways of customizing service to each of our locations. We can package any meal for either bulk cafeteria-style service, bulk classroom service or individually portioned and packaged per student.
Do you deliver breakfast/snack and lunch all at the same time?
The majority of our schools are getting all 3. We work with each one individually to cater to their individual needs and figure out the best delivery times.
We don't have servers in our school can you provide?
We have consulted with many schools on a number of logistical needs. Staffing is just one of those. The method in which Red Rabbit will assist you depends on the service type and reimbursement classification your school falls into. We'd be more than happy to work with you on this.
We are located in a DOE school-where would you serve lunch?
The option that will work best for a shared DOE facility is meals by classroom. Our courteous driver will deliver 1 individually marked container, plus a bag with utensils and beverages for each classroom. The containers are specifically designed to hold enough food for each classroom at temperature for up to 4 hours.
Who handles sanitation?
Red Rabbit handles at our facilities for food preparation. Staff have food handlers certificate and facility has Department of Health certificate. For service at school, if a school is going to have drop-off service, then at least one person on staff that will always be there, must obtain the food handlers certification. This can be done online or in person and costs about $25.00. If there will be any re-heating or cooking on site at the school, then the school is required to obtain a DOH inspection and certificate. If Red Rabbit will be a food service management company on site, then we will be responsible for our on-site staff to be certified.
If we have students with special dietary needs how do you accommodate ex kosher/ diabetic?
