Global Community Charter School is an incredibly passionate Charter school, constantly innovating their food program, and the first school that Red Rabbit partnered with to cook directly on site! During this crisis, Global stepped up early on to make sure their community was being fed by sponsoring hundreds of meals for students in Harlem. They also happen to be armed with one of the most fantastic kitchens in Harlem - which they have generously allowed Red Rabbit to use during the crisis to ensure our people are spread out. We are so proud to work with them, and grateful for their extreme generosity!
Who are they? Located in Harlem, Global Community Charter School (GCCS) is a PreK-8 International Baccalaureate World School, serving 450 students from the Harlem/Bronx communities. Their model of education is rigorous, inquiry-based, and teaches students and families to work together across differences in language, culture, economic background, age, and nationality. Students receive instruction in dance, music, science, Spanish, media and visual arts, and these lessons are integrated into their academic curriculum in the classroom. They even teach their students about Red Rabbit meal service and the National School Lunch Program (pictured to the right)!
What are they doing? Under normal circumstances, Global is a unique partner of Red Rabbit in that we use their on-site kitchen to cook and serve meals to their students. Our chefs curate our menu for the Global school community. When the pandemic hit, Global was one of our first partners that agreed to sponsor a mobile distribution route for their families. Recognizing that many of their families do not necessarily reside in the same neighborhood as the school, they specified locations that are more convenient for their families to pick up meals every day. These sites are open, and can feed any student! (See this map for their sites as well as all Red Rabbit distributions sites.) Additionally, because we have reinvented our kitchen for emergency food relief, we were in need of more space to prep, cook, and pack meals, and Global generously donated their kitchen for Red Rabbit to use. Once again, we have an entire team operating out of the Global kitchen (pictured below - socially distanced of course!), and we could not be more grateful!
How are they doing it? The model we use with Global to operate meal service directly from their kitchen is called FSMC (Food Service Management Company). As a charter school, Global applied to become their own School Food Authority (SFA) through NYSED. Under SFA status, they can find a meal service provider that matches their need. We have loved growing this part of our business with Global, and it has truly been a learning experience for all! They have also been using their SFA status to sponsor their meal distrbituion route during COVID19, and claim these meals for reimbursemnt under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Using these school meal dollars to benefit their community, now and always, has consistently been a strong suit for Global! How awesome are they!?
